Q. My feet hurt in my shoes. What can I do to avoid that?
A. Thankfully, there are a number of shoe inserts you can buy to help you avoid the aches and pains of shoes. If your shoes are simply "rubbing you the wrong way," perhaps you need to have them stretched by a cobbler to avoid blisters. Your shoes can also cause blisters if they are too large. Try Foot Petals Tip Toes and Heavenly Heelz to help them fit more snugly. Dr. Scholl's makes a full suite of shoe inserts for a variety of aches and pains, and you might also consider Insolia high heel shoe inserts, Airplus Ultra Arches or Footminders Catwalk High-Heel Insoles. Fabulous shoes are wonderful, but you only get one pair of feet! Take care of them. A lot of pain can be avoided simply by being more aware of fit before making a purchase.
Q.
I need help finding comfortable, stylish shoes. Can you suggest brands and styles I can look for?
A. One brand I've found to be practical, comfortable and affordable is Franco Sarto. Also, Cole Haan is well-known for comfort and style, and a brand called Sofft offers cute, comfortable styles. Taryn Rose, developed by an orthopedic surgeon, is also well known for comfort, though their shoes are pricey. As far as styles go, choose a slightly thicker heel (but not too thick) for better support and wear, and look for a heel height under 3 inches. A slightly rounded toe gives tootsies extra room while still looking feminine. Thankfully, wedges are still a big trend for summer and are usually very comfortable and easy to wear. If you prefer high heels, look for one with a platform so the heel height is reduced by an inch or so. Of course most flats are easy and comfortable. They may not be practical for the board room but they will serve you well as you run errands or chase your kids, for instance.
Q. What do you think about the Coco Chanel rule about taking off one item of jewelry before leaving the house?
A. I think it depends on your style personality. If you enjoy making a dramatic, bold statement, why would you take off any jewelry? Current trends say the more the merrier when it comes to jewelry and accessorizing. I agree, but that's because "statement jewelry" is in sync with my personal style. If you enjoy understated, classic dressing, perhaps you can apply Coco's rule to a point. Don't feel compelled to always remove an accessory. If you feel like your look is fine as it is, leave it alone and go with it!
